London meets Edmonton in 100 mile house

I can’t even remember how I discovered 100 mile house. Now that I am thinking about it, it may have been a chance discovery one day on CBC Radio 3. But it was love at first listen.

What immediately caught my ear was the way these two voices fit together – so effortlessly, so in sync with each other, so complementary. One almost seemed to complete the other. And while each of these voices are pleasant in themselves, together they are magical. The whole truly is greater than the sum of the parts.

The voices are those of husband Peter Stone and wife Denise MacKay. Peter is of British origin; Denise hails from Edmonton. The sound has a London-inspired urban folk edge with an intimacy and lack of pretension so characteristic of Edmonton.

I ventured out this cold afternoon to catch a couple of sets (and a couple of pints) at the Black Dog Freehouse. Peter and Denise were joined by bandmate Scott Zubot whose string instrumentation complements the vocal harmonies so well and a few other players who rounded out the sound.

My favourite songs are the quiet, moody ones when Peter and Denise really sing together, playing off each other so perfectly. I’ve attached a few samples below. Or you can head over to iTunes and buy their album. Or listen to 100 mile house at CBC Radio 3.

Almost as a postscript, I was thinking about who these guys remind me of: Joshua Radin, Amos Lee, Alexi Murdoch, just to name a few.
