Quaking in my trunks

borderquakeWe are all safe and well having made it through our first earthquake. Reportedly centered in Mexico, we felt it very strongly as we sat by the pool late today enjoying the afternoon sun. Linda was in the pool with Ben and Ella. The ground felt like it was swaying on water – not rumbling as much as undulating. Almost twisting. And, like some of the pictures being shown on CNN from San Diego tonight, the water in the pool was rising and falling in a big wave. It was all over in about 20 seconds.

I felt it at first, but I didn’t recognize the feeling of the earth moving under me. By the time we were aware of it, the movement had passed and the ground was still again. If it had lasted much longer, I think it would have been much more troubling.

LA immediately ran inside to check the internet and we spent the rest of the afternoon in the realization that earthquakes of magnitude greater than 2.5 happen every few minutes.

Apparently the LPGA event being held down the road in Rancho Mirage also felt it, according to the LA Times.
