Apple Crumble is one of those desserts that makes itself, really.
You start with apples – firm, tart, meaty apples. I’m never sure what kind are the best to use. If you pick the wrong ones, worst thing that happens is you end up with apple sauce covered in sweet crunchy bits. If you are quick on your feet, no one will know that wasn’t what you set out to make.
When you’ve peeled and cut the apples, place them in a glass baking dish. And that’s about it. Why sweeten them? If they are good fresh apples, you want the taste to come out. I love tart apples, so I’m not scared of a bit of tartness.
Then, make the crumble. My recipe is simple. In a big bowl, combine:
- 1 cup of oats (Quaker Quick oats are great)
- 1 cup of brown sugar (you heard me)
- sprinkle some flour in
- cinnamon to taste
- 1 stick of butter (make sure it’s at room temperature)
Spread the crumble on the apples, covering completely.
Bake uncovered for 30-40 minutes at 375 degrees F or until crispy and slightly brown on top. You may need some additional time, depending on the apples.
Get it all prepared then put it in the oven as you sit down for dinner. By the time you are finished, the kitchen will be filled with the wonderful aroma of fresh Apple Crumble.
(Enjoy, Sylvia. This one’s for you!)
